Design and Technology (D&T) Technician

Job Title:                DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN

                                    Term-time – 35 hours per week, plus 5 INSET days & 5 additional days

                                     39.6 weeks per year

Reports to:           Subject Leader, Design and Technology

Salary:               Starting salary NJC scale 3, scale point 5.  £24,080 per annum.

                                   (FTE £28,521 per annum).

                               Rising to NJC scale 3, scale point 6.  £24,424 per annum.

                                   (FTE £28,925 per annum).

Working Days:      5 days per week

Working Hours:        35 hrs per wk.  8.15am – 3.45pm, including 30 minute unpaid lunch break.

Place of Work:           Vyners School

An exciting role for a committed and enthusiastic individual to join a vibrant and creative department, which fully integrates computer aided design and manufacture into projects and aspects of work.  The successful candidate will support the delivery of the D&T curriculum through ensuring tools, equipment and materials are safely maintained and ready for use and offering practical support to teachers and students.  The department is well resourced and offers pupils the opportunity to use specialist equipment and industry standard machinery, as well as offering high-end training in Product Design.  The successful candidate will:

  • Support learning and progress of students, particularly in design technology.
  • Have a proven track record of working with relevant tools and equipment and a high level of technical and ‘hands-on’ knowledge in the D&T discipline.
  • An excellent awareness of Health and Safety issues and experience of H&S and COSHH risk assessment.
  • Help the teaching staff with practical classes and to ensure the equipment is used correctly and safely by students.
  • Ability to play a part in promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students and to act as an appropriate role model for young people.
  • Previous experience in a similar role, with a proven record of effective liaison with students.
  • Possess a good general level of education and be emotionally robust and capable of dealing with challenging student behaviour.
  • Have a proven track record of good working relationships and professionalism.
  • Feel confident in working independently with small groups of pupils.

Vyners is a very popular and oversubscribed mixed eight form entry, 11-18 comprehensive school, situated in a pleasant residential area in North West London, bordering Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.    We have a track record of real success at all Key Stages.  In 2024, 81% of students achieved grades 9-4 in both English and Maths at GCSE and we are consistently ranked in the top 10% of all schools nationally for progress measures and attainment.   At A-Level 26% of all grades were A* - A and 50% A* - B.   The school converted to academy status on 1 November 2011 and is part of the Vanguard Learning Trust which also includes one other secondary and three primary schools.

We are well known for high academic standards, good behaviour, and our strong community spirit including a strong house system with students leading their peers.  Pupils benefit from excellent relationships with each other and with staff.  They are well cared for and have adults they trust and who they can talk to if they have problems”  (Ofsted, 2025).   Many students are involved in extracurricular sport, music and drama, performing at a high level including prestigious public events and performing in our own school productions.
